LEC at a Glance
The LEC, a non-profit organization established in 2003, provides literacy tutoring to elementary students from Title I schools throughout the Virginia Commonwealth who are reading below their grade level. The goal is to help these students become proficient readers by the end of the third grade. Students who are reading at or above their grade level by the end of the third grade are four times more likely to graduate from high school.
Over 2000 elementary students from low income communities have been served by LEC literacy tutors since 2007.
The LEC establishes Literacy and Technology Centers (LTC) at Title I elementary schools to help students from low income communities become more proficient readers and more adept at using technology to support their learning and growth. The LEC purchases up to 25 computers and provides new furniture for each new LTC established. To date, 15 Literacy and Technology Centers have been established at various Title I schools throughout Hampton Roads and Richmond, Virginia,
Over 7,000 students have been impacted by the LEC Literacy and Technology Centers.
The LEC mobilizes, equips, and deploys tutors from for-profit and non-profit settings to provide one-to-one literacy tutoring to students from Title I schools. Tutors are assigned to one student and commit to working with their assigned student 1 hour a week for one academic year.
Approximately 90% of the students who participate in the program improve reading proficiency.
Over 30,000 volunteer hours have been donated to the LEC to help children become proficient readers.
Since 2007, 2000+ tutors have participated in the LEC Literacy Tutoring Initiative.
The LEC partners with the law enforcement, corporate, college/university and faith-based communities to impact the students in Title I schools.
Funding for the technology labs is generated primarily through the corporate community.
Over 100 law enforcement officers are serving in the schools throughout the Commonwealth.
